IDEP Emergency Response to the Asian Tsunami

Overview
The tsunami of December 2004 completely destroyed much of the west coast of Aceh. Towns, villages, roads and other infrastructure were swept away in minutes along with over 126,000 people, in one of the greatest natural disasters in living history.
“Aceh Aid at IDEP” (AAAI) was launched on December 27th 2004 to assist victims of the Asian Tsunami. Supporters from Bali & throughout the world generously opened their hearts and their resources to make what became an enormous emergency response initiative possible.
From its outset, it was AAAI’s policy to deliver assistance directly to those who needed it most, through trusted partner organizations. AAAI was able to send relief supplies by land from Medan to Banda Aceh and by sea to isolated communities along the coast.
After the 9.2 earthquakes struck the island of Nias, IDEP supported projects there as well. In the recovery phase, IDEP supported important community rehabilitation work in the sub district of Samatiga outside of Meulaboh, and continues today to help local communities in Aceh to recover from this terrible disaster through the Aceh GreenHand Field School Program.
Through December 2004 and August 2005 IDEP & its partners delivered over half a million dollars of “intelligent aid” to thousands of people throughout the area.
See IDEP’s Aceh Emergency Response Activity Map for more details.
Aceh Emergency Response in Partnership with Key local NGOs
AAAI worked with several excellent local NGOs and community groups to delivery a variety of well-targeted and timely emergency support initiatives for the people in need of help in Aceh and the surrounding islands.

Dedicated Volunteers & Supporters

IDEP expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all of the dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly without communications, infrastructure or skilled human resources. Over 100 AAAI volunteers had served in Aceh by the end of March. At that time, the crisis phase was considered to be over and IDEP and SOS dissolved their temporary partnership to pursue recovery plans.
Special thanks to our key partner the Sumatran Orangutan Society and to the incredible Aceh response supporters making these initiatives possible.
