| Since 2002, IDEP has been conducting extensive research, needs assessments, and directly responding to disasters in Indonesia. This work in conjunction with one of IDEP's core competencies, media development, has resulted in the development, piloting and distribution of a culturally appropriate Community Based Crisis Preparedness and Response Educational Program.
About IDEP’s CBDM educational kit
IDEP has developed a comprehensive Community Based Disaster Management (CBDM) kit for use in communities throughout Indonesia. The kit is simple and practical, containing a practical planning and action manual, public awareness posters, and a series of disaster comics. These materials cover planning and action steps for community disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. The kit is presented in simple language appropriate for grass roots communities throughout Indonesia.

IDEP’s CBDM team is also developing a basic facilitator’s handbook for people who are interested in being community CBDM facilitators. This handbook includes a more detailed reference section on specific disasters; lesson plans for community disaster trainings and some basic facilitation and creative training techniques for conducting successful community trainings. The facilitator’s handbook also explains how to use the creative tools that IDEP’s CBDM team has developed for participatory program monitoring and Evaluation.

| Distribution of IDEP’s CBDM educational materials |
| |
IDEP, in conjunction with its local partners have distributed thousands of disaster related comic books, and hundreds of CBDM educational kits, emergency response media, and Permaculture disaster recovery manuals to various communities and schools, throughout Indonesia. These materials are distributed before disasters happen to educate communities in preparedness, when disasters are happening to help communities understand the basic steps they can take to prevent further problems from occurring and after disasters have happened to help people understand how they can recover more sustainably from disasters. IDEP is constantly receiving requests from local communities, educators and NGOs for materials but ongoing support for printing and distributing these materials is still needed. If you or your company or organization is interested in sponsoring the distribution of more materials to areas in need please contact us for more details.
