In March and April, the GreenHand Field School successfully concluded its 4th Village Design Course with 22 Graduates, and welcomed Richard Mason from UBS as a visitor.
The fourth Village Development Course (March 20 to April 3, 2006) was successfully run by Indonesian GreenHands, 80% of whom are tsunami survivors. The recruitment process 2 weeks prior to the course found over 50 people interested in registering. Of these, 32 were selected and 22 subsequently completed the course and received a certificate. About 90% of the students are tsunami survivors from the Lhoong area.
The students were instructed in basic Permaculture philosophy and techniques, including the 5 zones. Putting theory into practice, they worked in groups to create food gardens, make compost, save seeds, build a nursery and other activities at the GreenHand Field School.
The best 13 students were chosen to become Trainers of Trainers (TOT) and will receive further teaching in order to advance their skills and knowledge of permaculture.
Richard Mason, an environmental specialist visiting from the UBS office in London shared his expertise in biodiesel. He demonstrated how to make alternative energy from used kitchen oil. The staff and students are eager to experiment with this new technology.
Richard was warmly welcomed at the site and was quickly accepted by the local people at Lamsujen.
Made Suraja, the wastewater garden specialist from IDEP's Bali headquarters, visited Lamsujen during the training to offer a module on this system of waste water management. He delivered a detailed training on the principles and parts of a wastewater garden including leach field and surface irrigation details and offered step-by-step guidelines and materials for building a system. He included information of the types of plants to use and how many should be planted per square meter in the garden and concluded with a question and answer session. Made also trained the participants to conduct permeability tests.
