May and June at the GreenHand Field School

The 5th VDC conducted at the GreenHand Field School
The 5th Village Development Course (VDC) was concluded on June 24th. 36 students were selected to participate, and 30 (16 females and 14 males) successfully completed the 2-week course and received their VDC certificates.

Congratulations to the graduates of the 2nd GreenHand Training of Trainers Course
June 24th saw the conclusion of the 2nd Training of Trainers courses at the GreenHand Field School. There were 13 graduates (6 females and 7 males), from the villages of: Lamsujen, Krueng Kala, Meunasah Lhok, Pasi, Jantang, Binch and Banda Aceh. All of these students are now GreenHand trainer candidates. Their personal visions are focused on becoming trainers in the fields of organic farming, waste management, bamboo production and other handicrafts.

Several specialist trainers from IDEP's Bali headquarters visited Lamsujen
During the duration of VDC No 5 and ToT No 2, several Bali based IDEP team members were welcomed to the GreenHand Field School where they worked with GHFS team members to transfer knowledge and skills in the following techniques.

Lisa Ismiandewi, IDEP's Waste Management Trainer delivered a detailed training to the ToT students at GHFS. The training covered principles and methods for community based and household waste management, the principles of wise waste management including waste separation and making recycled paper. The course also included an in-depth study of problems faced in local communities due to wastes and worked with the local team members to develop locally appropriate solutions to these problems. As part of this training of trainers Lisa conducted a hands-on waste management program with 20 children from Lamsujen village. This included story telling about wise waste management, and working together to clean up a local river. These activities were received very enthusiastically by the local children, who waited on site for the workshop 2 hours ahead of time, and refused to go home afterwards! GFS staff are now continuing these waste management trainings and transferring the skills they have learned to other students, as well as integrating them into other local outreach programs with Acehnese children.

Gusti Ayu Komang Sri Mahayuni "Sayu", IDEP's Seed Saving Trainer, gave targeting training to GreenHand staff, ToT and VDC students on the topic of organic seed saving, explaining the benefits of making the shift from purchasing expensive hybrid seeds to establishing a self sustainable seed supply for GFS and the local community. The entire cycle of seed saving was covered (planting, maintaining, harvesting, cleaning, drying, testing, storing and distributing) as well as an overview of plant structure and pollination processes and why different techniques apply to different types of plants. GFS staff will use the knowledge gained during these trainings to expand the nursery and seed stock on site, and also to teach and encourage future students to practice self managed seed production in their own communities.

Made Suraja, IDEP's Wastewater Garden Trainer, continued the training started during his last visit to the school. He led the GreenHand staff through the complete process of constructing a demonstration Wastewater Garden system on site, from costing and design through to pouring the concrete and testing the static water. GFS staff have been trained in maintenance of the WWG system and will now design the garden using locally sourced wetland plants.

Livelihoods training for women in 4 local villages
At request of and supported by UNESCO, GFS staff conducted livelihoods training for 32 women from 4 local villages in the Lhoong district. The trainings, held at both a GFS and in the local villages, focused on the topics of nutritious food and sewing, especially hammocks and bed linen, with the goal of developing small-scale businesses in the future. The women were given work tools as part of the training, including sewing and hemming machines, ovens and stoves. The GreenHand Field School will continue to help these women with product development and marketing using Fair Trade principles.
