Staff Profile - Dessy Haryanti Soelthan, Waste management Trainer & Administration Manager

Dessy oversees the administration tasks for GFS, including financial reporting. Prior to joining the GFS team she worked as a trader and assistant manager for a large stock exchange company in Medan.

Dessy was in Medan when the Tsunami struck, and 3 days later traveled to Banda Aceh where she worked as a volunteer for the Indonesian Red Cross, Aceh Besar division. As the very first woman volunteer to join that agency, Dessy assisted with evacuating victims and distributing aid to those in need.

Dessy participated in and graduated from the first VDC held at the GreenHand Field School. 'I felt the course gave me a new vision for my life, an opportunity to work in harmony with the natural environment' says Dessy. During her time at GFS Dessy has seen that Permaculture can give communities independence and sustainability, and she is committed to the GFS mission of helping communities to work in a constructive way with their environment.

Dessy says that the impact that GFS is having on local communities can already be seen. She remembers one VDC participant who was particularly interested in the teachings about liquid fertilizer and compost, as he could clearly see the usefulness of these techniques for his farm. After graduating and returning to his village, this participant conducted liquid fertilizer and compost demonstrations of his own, and Dessy reports that now all the people in the village are 'very excited' about this technique and using it for themselves.
