How IDEP Began

A long time ago...

In 1998 Indonesia entered a phase of severe financial and social crisis. In response, an informal group of people from Bali got together to discuss how they could best help.

The group discussed the the growing challenges being faced by Indonesian communities, and did an evaluation of existing natural and human resources nationwide. The decision was made to focus attention on facilitating NGO programs’ in as many areas of Indonesia as possible through a ‘Training of Trainers’ in Permaculture Design, which offered these NGOs understanding and tools to assist their local communities to provide food, shelter, energy and other needs in a sustainable way.

One of the world’s primary Permaculture experts, Robyn Francis of ‘Permaculture Education’ at ERDA Institute to facilitate a 3-week intensive workshop that trained participants from some of the top NGOs throughout Indonesia, who were selected from over 200 applicants, as Permaculture Designers. Following this, by request of these initial 35 participants, Yayasan IDEP and Yayasan MACK (Membina Api Cinta Kasih) were officially founded to continue this important work.
