One Doctor's Story
Dr Carolyn De Marco didn’t really mean to go
to Aceh.
"I was hesitant to go,” she admits now. “I
wasn’t sure I could deal with the grief. But it was
absolutely the right thing to do.”

The
loss of the Endless Sun
On April 11, an aid ship went down off Nias Island,
Sumatra. The vessel was fully loaded with aid supplies, kitchen
equipment, reconstruction materials and tools, three motor bikes for
delivering goods on shore, and children’s school supplies.
Just as the boat was preparing to set sail for Aceh, a devastating
earthquake hit the island of Nias.

An Education for Taufik’s Daughters
Taufik Sinaga, an Aceh disaster humanity volunteer, died in Medan in March
from malaria and hepatitis contracted in the field. On April 13, IDEP
planned a fundraising event to establish a fund for the education of Taufik’s
daughters. Special thanks to all who contributed their time and efforts
to this family.

Volunteers
from Bali establish outposts in Samatiga
A team of volunteers from Bali has established a modest outpost in Samatiga,
where about 9,000 refugees have gathered. The team is providing sanitation,
fresh water and informal counseling and other urgently needed services
to villagers and Internally Displaced People (IDPs).
