IDEP Aceh Recovery Update #1
Monday, December 27, 2004 10:52 AM

The following is an excerpt from one of our regular updates which were designed to enlist support and increase the coordination of relief efforts for the survivors of the Tsunami in Aceh & North Sumatra.

Dear all,
As you know by now an enormous earthquake which resulted in tidal waves / tsunamis has hit the region. The origin of the quake was here in Indonesia, and of the listed more than 12,400 causalities the death toll to date in North Sumatra is over 4,500 people, but it will take weeks before the real death toll is known. Most of these people are in the poverty stricken area of Aceh, where help is very much needed. Sanitation, potable water, medication, food and shelter is a rising critical issue.
Here in Bali we are gathering donations of all kinds to be sent to Aceh and Sumatra. Anything you can donate will be of assistance.

IDEP foundation has a donations drop off point at our office in the Ubud area (Jl Hanoman No 44b, Ubud), while another group of local NGOs has organized a drop off point in Denpasar at JIKA- POSKO Bantuan Bencana Aceh - Jalan Tjok Tresna #49, Renon

We are working in conjunction with Masyarakat Penanggulangan Bencana (MPBI) The Indonesian people’s association of disaster management to get support to people in need. They are currently setting up a distribution network in Aceh and Sumatra.

We will open a dedicated bank account today for anyone who may wish to make a donation for supporting the victims in Indonesia. More information on supplies needed will be sent out as information is received.

Donations are being collected here in Bali on a volunteer basis. We will work hard to ensure that donations reach their intended target. Please help.

Initial items that you can consider donating (in kind or money to purchase) include:
  • Water purification tablets, and any other water purification tools
  • Bleach, disinfectants
  • Soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • First Aid medications, and over-the counter medicines for fever and diarrhea
  • Non perishable food, vitamins (especially for infants & children), rice, instant noodles
  • Buckets, and plastic water containers
  • Sheets, towels, hammocks, mosquito nets and any other linens / bedding
  • Any (if possible quick drying) clothing
  • Cooking and eating utensils
Thank you for any help / support you are able to give.
