The Bali Cares project
A non-profit project that promotes fair trade and local charitable projects on Bali

About the Bali Cares Project
Bali Cares is a non-profit project which was developed by Yayasan IDEP in 2004 to help promote the principles & practices of Fair Trade on Bali, while increasing public awareness & support for several of Bali’s charitable foundations. The Bali Cares project also increases awareness about local social organizations. It is a place where people can meet, exchange ideas, and gather information.

The Bali Cares Project sells crafts and health and food products made by local foundation beneficiaries as well small local businesses that are committed to Bali’s social, economic and environmental sustainability. The project is also supported through donations of goods which are sold at Bali Cares.

About the Bali Cares Prints Collection
The Bali Cares project by Yayasan IDEP has also created a range of inspiring prints, postcards and bookmarks which showcase local social projects’ activities in the field. Sales of these prints helps the important work of these local projects to continue, while increasing awareness about their program activities and the environmental, social and educational challenges that they are facing.

Bali Cares helps to increase awareness about Fair Trade on Bali
In 2004, The Bali Cares Project was supported by the Bali Recovery Fund from ACCESS – which was set up to assist in the economic rehabilitation of Bali after the Bali Bomb - to work with a group of local Fair Trade entrepreneurs to research international standards of Fair Trade and to determine the most appropriate application of Fair Trade Principles for producers and buyers on Bali. As part of this project IDEP worked with Mitra Bali the most well recognized local Fair Trade Organization, to host a participatory development workshop that involved several local producers. As  a result of this workshop, the participants defined the approaches to the principles that they believed met Bali needs and socio-economic environment.

IDEP then developed a simple public awareness campaign - click here to see of download a PDF version of the poster – which lists the local Fair Trade Principles as follows:

Key Principles of Fair Trade (developed on Bali)

Fair Trade Provides Opportunities - It addresses poverty alleviation and sustainable development by creating opportunities for producers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by conventional trading systems.

Fair Trade is Transparent & Accountable - Fair Trade uses transparent management systems to deal fairly and respectfully with trading partners.

Fair Trade Supports Capacity Building - Fair Trade develops producers’ independence through sustained relationships. It assists producers and their marketing organizations with financial and technical assistance and improves their management skills and their access to new markets.

Fair Trade Pays Fair Prices - Fair Trade provides fair and prompt payment to producers. It supports socially just and environmentally sound production. Also, whenever possible, fair traders help producers with pre-production financing.

Fair Trade’s Commitment to Women - Fair Trade provides equal pay for equal work by women and men. Fair Trade means that women’s work is properly valued and rewarded. Women are always paid for their contribution to the production process and are empowered in their organizations.

Fair Trade Working Conditions - Fair Trade provides safe and healthy working environment for producers. Any participation of children does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play and conforms to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the law and norms in the local context.

Fair Trade for the Environment - Fair Trade encourages producers to develop products based on sustainable use of natural resources, giving communities incentive to preserve their natural environments for future generations.

Fair Trade Increases Awareness - Fair Trade provides information about producers’ history, culture and living conditions. By doing so, it enhances cross-cultural understanding and respect between consumers and communities in the developing world.

Fair Trade Respects Cultural Identity - It encourages producers to produce and develop product based on their cultural traditions and natural resources. It encourages producers to use local knowledge and to preserve and develop their cultural identity.
