Yayasan IDEP’s GMO Public Awareness Project

The development of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) for productive crops is creating a world-wide controversy. Independent researchers and informed NGOs are warning against various potential negative effects from GMOs, while the companies that sell GMOs are circulating potentially misleading information about product safety.

In Indonesia there is still very little public understanding or awareness about the important related issues, including the environmental, social and economic impacts of the increasing use of GMOs for food and building materials production.

About Yayasan IDEP Foundation’s GMO information kit and campaign
In 2001 the Media Team at Yayasan IDEP, with support from SCIC, CUSO Indonesia, Bina Desa and Yayasan FIELD, began researching, compiling information & developing a culturally appropriate GMO awareness information kit and campaign.

Yayasan IDEP’s hope is that local NGO field staff and schools will use the resources available on this website as a tool to engage farmers, other community groups and students on the topic of GMO technology through discussion groups and workshops on this important topic.

The kit is designed to offer important resources that can assist in increasing public awareness about what GMOs are, how they are made, the potential risks to the environment where they are used, as well as some suggestions on how to increase awareness about GMOs in local areas.

IDEP’s GMO information kit and campaign includes:
  • 3 x posters about some key GMO related issues
  • 12 x easy-to-understand fact sheets
  • A series of articles with more information about the issues in the fact sheets
  • 1 x GMO workshop lesson plan
  • 2 x GMO stickers

To view these resources on-line in either Indonesian or English go to our Public Awareness Media ‘About GMO’ page. These resources can be downloaded from there, free of charge, and are designed to be easily photocopied and handed out as needed.

This package was designed to be flexible; individual fact sheets might be appropriate to stand on their own, depending on NGO and farmer groups’ needs.

If you prefer you can contact us to order the complete campaign materials & lesson plan in a CD or hard copy format. Related posters and stickers are also available by mail order.

For those interested in finding out more about GMO related issues, our website’s links page has links to several websites that contain updated GMO related information.
