About Volunteering at IDEP

“On this International Volunteer Day, let us recognize the contribution that volunteers make to societies all over the world...and let us remember that each contribution, no matter how small, can help make a difference. These dedicated and courageous individuals are important partners in the quest for a better, fairer and safer world.”
Kofi A. Annan, United Nations Secretary-General, December 5, 2003

IDEP Foundation’s volunteer opportunities are designed to allow international volunteers and interns to share their skills with local social and environmental projects and communities on a grass roots level while gaining experience with an Indonesian NGO (non-governmental organization). Many of IDEP Foundation’s programs have been developed and supported by international volunteers. We could never have achieved so much without so much support – and a special thanks goes out to all the wonderful volunteers that have been with us to date.

We have a range of volunteer opportunities in Bali and Aceh. To for more information on current volunteers opportunities please click here.

For national (local volunteers) some of the following information (Which has been designed for international volunteers) may not apply. Please feel free to contact hr@idepfoundation.org if you have any questions. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions about volunteering with IDEP

What types of volunteers are needed?
IDEP is need of highly skilled volunteers in the office and on site, either in Bali or Aceh. The requirements vary for different positions. Click here to see current volunteering opportunities with IDEP.

What is the minimum time commitment?
This depends on the position, but IDEP Foundation requires a minimum of 3-4 months for even the shortest volunteer placement. The job descriptions on the current volunteer opportunities page indicate the minimum time commitment needed for each position.

What kind of budget do I need for daily living?
We estimate around 2.000.000 to 4.000.0000 Rupiah per month for Ubud, at a low budget level. This of course depends of your lifestyle.

Will I get by in English?
Yes, most staff and volunteers in the office speak English. However Indonesian and local languages are used regularly as well. We strongly encourage our volunteers to immerse themselves in the local language and culture; this makes for a more enriching volunteer experience.

What work equipment should I bring?
For work at IDEPs head office, volunteers should bring their own laptop computer. Unfortunately, IDEP does not have the resources to provide the volunteer with a computer. Other office supplies will be provided by IDEP.

What type of visa do I need?
You will need an index 211 (the old Social Cultural visa), which will be sponsored by IDEP. The cost for the visa varies for different countries, but it will be around US$40, and must be paid for by the volunteer. This visa is extendable the second, third, forth and fifth months of your stay, subject to a fee of approximately US$60 each time. It is valid for a total of six months after which you will be required to leave the country to purchase another visa. Always check with your closest embassy or consulate for processing times and what documents you need to apply for the visa initially.

What are the working hours?
You can either volunteer part time or full time; we even have virtual volunteers who assist us with translations over email. Your work hours will vary greatly depend on the position and can be negotiated with the relevant manager.

How many staff and volunteers work at IDEP?
There are always some volunteers working at IDEP, although the majority of people are staff. The composition varies from month to month and is always subject to change. Currently we have a total of 86 staff and volunteers working across our two major sites: Ubud Bali and Aceh. Less than fifty percent of this 86 are located at the central office in Bali.

How do I find accommodation?
IDEP’s HR department will assist with finding suitable accommodation once the volunteer has been selected.

Do I get any reimbursement or allowance?
IDEP does not provide volunteers with living or accommodation allowances. Similarly, IDEP does not reimburse any costs associated with the volunteer placement, such as travel.

What kind of support does IDEP offer?
We will support and help the volunteer with visa arrangements, pre arrival information, airport pick-up, finding accommodation, orientation and lunch, but IDEP unfortunately, is not capable of supporting the volunteer financially.
