Krueng Kolor - Training and Demonstration Center for Reconstruction of Sustainable Villages in Aceh.

ABOUT KRUENG KOLOR | PROGRAM COMPONENTS | ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED | PROJECT DURATION & COSTS | SAMATIGA | SAFER FUTURE | ISLAND AID | BACK TO PROGRAMS

Thousands of survivors displaced by the tsunami will have to completely rebuild their villages and their lives. Landscapes have been altered and small farms buried by the disaster. Without appropriate skills and technology these people are at risk of sliding further into poverty and hunger.

At IDEP’s heart is permaculture – permanent agriculture techniques that assist people to generate food security while practicing sound environmental principals. An opportunity exists in Aceh to help survivors settle in or near their original villages using sustainable, environmentally sound principals while providing them with food security and livelihood skills.

The Center will be a place where people from tsunami-affected areas can obtain practical training in a live-in model village. The Centre will provide a living classroom for trainees, with the tsunami zone, the nearby village and IDP camp serving as hands-on training areas. Trainees, half of whom will be women, will be selected in cooperation with community leaders from Acehenese villages and from NGOs and other agencies.
The Centre will be located about 45 km south of Banda Aceh

It will be built of local resources and contain a range of demonstration gardens, animal husbandry systems, sanitation systems, accommodation and other facilities which double as construction models.

The center will recieve its technolgy supplies via the Endless Sun Vessel, and offer appropriate technology training workshops, including:

• Sustainable village design principles
• Water and sanitation strategies
• Home garden food production
• Year round food security
• Animal husbandry
• Women’s small enterprise development
• Natural resource development
• Ecological repair
• Shelter design
• Construction w/ tsunami-zone material

Participants will be trained on two levels

The Village Development Course is a two-week intensive workshop, while the GreenHand Course trains trainers over three months. GreenHands graduates will deliver training courses around Aceh including in Samatiga. Each participant will receive a detailed manual which s/he will continue to refine and share best practices with others. The Centre will also bring in rotating specialist who will train participants in small enterprise and livelihood skills development including:

• Essential oil production
• Soap making
• Alternative Energy & Biodeisel
• Blacksmith training
• Construction and carpentry
• Bamboo cultivation and use
• Neem cultivation & by-products
• Bee-keeping
• Sewing and embroidery
• Cold pressed coconut oil
• Organic produce

The project will be designed and managed by an Australian Permaculture specialist who has already established similar, successful projects in Australia and Timor Leste.

It is anticipated that at least 1,300 students will pass through the Centre in three years, generating a core of competency at the community level.

IDEP Foundation

IDEP and its partner organizations in Aceh are currently running several relief and reconstruction projects. These include a midwifery clinic, community rebuilding and sanitation and a model for sustainable development and environmentally friendly reconstruction, which will serve as a training facility for people from throughout Aceh. IDEP is also working in conjunction with AsiaWorks and Yayasan Andaru Selaras to deliver urgently needed aid by boat to the west coast of Aceh through the vessel Endless Sun.

GREEN CAMP

Green Camp was founded by local Achenese who all lost their homes and families in the tsunami. Since the disaster occurred, the Green Camp Team have been delivering aid to isolated coastal communities on foot and on dirt bikes using forest paths. With the most modest equipment, mostly borrowed, they opened up communications and directing aid to areas where other support workers had not yet arrived. The Green Camp group is working in conjunction with IDEP for the Sustainable Villages Center’s development.

Project Duration
The project will run under IDEP’s auspices for a period of three years. The project’s first year of operations will include the participatory design and construction of the facilities and food security gardens. The following 2 years will focus on wide scale training and networking of projects developed by GreenHand Trainers Aceh wide. At the end of the three year project the center will be handed over to the local community as an ongoing means of sustainable livelihood and community education and training center.
Project Costs
The costs for this program include construction of the facilities and center’s infrastructure : US$680,400 (much of the materials needed will be salvaged from the tsunami zone & local renewable resources) as well as training of over 1,330 people over 2.5 years @ $500/graduate (includes the provision of appropriate technology tools for the establishment of their local reconstruction, livelihoods development and food security programs). At all stages of project development the center’s activities will be run in a way that strengthens the local economy.
