Disaster Management > Emergency Response Samatiga Aceh Program

The sub district of Samatiga, north of Meulaboh, was devastated by the tsunami. Starting in mid-January 2005, IDEP staff and volunteers had a continuous presence on the ground in 7 villages. From their base camp at Cot Seulamat, their activities included: evacuating corpses, digging pit latrines, assessing and clearing wells, liaising with large agencies for the delivery of food, water and other support, conducting informal counseling, training in simple construction techniques, building a simple bamboo clinic and counseling centre, training villagers in mapping and proposal writing, establishing a bamboo treatment centre, starting an embroidery project for women, sourcing fruit trees and planting mangroves and Vetiver grass for coastal rehabilitation.school programs click here
