Disaster Management > Emergency Response Earthquake in Java May 2006

On Saturday the 27th of May at 5:55 am an Earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Central Java with the epicenter in the sea south of the city of Jogyakarta. Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by the Java Quake, which occurred in one of the world’s most populated areas.

In some places like the district of Klaten small groups of local NGOs and community banded together to coordinate distribution of what little aid they can get access to. IDEP is supporting such local initiatives through our partners on the ground. As with IDEP’s Tsunami appeal, where we channeled over US$ 1,000,000 of funds donated by people like you to help victims, we are again calling for donations to help victims of the Java Quake.
