Even before the GreenHand Field School Base Camp house was finished, the Home Garden was marked out. This was fenced with local materials to keep out wandering buffalo and wild pigs.

The GFS team, which now included its first woman member, received their first lessons in organic gardening. These first gardens were planted with a wide variety of vegetable seeds and fruit trees.
