About the SOS Children’s Orphanage

The SOS Children’s Orphanage is a non-profit, non-governmental organization active in caring for orphan and neglected children. They have no political affiliations, are not based on religious beliefs, and no one individual or group is profiting from this organization. The children at the orphanage come from many different backgrounds, no differentiation is made due to personal beliefs, religion or race. At the SOS Orphanage the children are provided with a place to live, education, and a surrogate family to care for them.

The SOS Children’s Orphanage began in 1989 and was officially established by Menteri Sosial RI on October 23rd, 1991. The SOS Children’s Orphanage is located on 6.9 hectares of land in the village of Bantas, East Selemadeg, Tabanan, Bali. They have 12 housing buildings with complete facilities, which are adequate for housing both the children as well as their surrogate family.

From when the orphanage was founded until the present, the SOS Children’s Orphanage has cared for 247 children; all of who have grown to feel confident in themselves, have found good employment, and with their surrogate family have found happiness

The SOS Children’s Orphanage Activities
Offering a Family to Children who are Less-fortunate
The SOS Children’s Orphanage provides support for orphans, neglected children or children who’s family are unable of supporting them. Through the orphanage, children who have never before been part of a family, are given the opportunity to experience the care and compassion of family life. At the orphanage, the way of living follows these four principals: 1. Every child must have a mother. 2. A child is accepted as one of the siblings and works to care for younger siblings as well as learn from older siblings. 3. The home in which a child lives with his/her family must feel natural and there should be a sense of belonging. 4. In the village surroundings, support and consideration from the community must be available to every child.
Supporting Children in Shaping Their Own Future
The SOS Children’s Orphanage offers an environment for children to live according to his/her cultural beliefs and religion, this creates an environment in which they can feel accepted as an active community member, providing the opportunity for the children to express their individual interests and potentials. The orphanage provides education and training so that the children living there can fulfill their ambitions and be prepared to support themselves later in life.
Providing the Opportunity to Flourish Within a Community
With the support of a community, children can feel a sense of belonging; they learn and grow from different members of the community. This sense of belonging is particularly important when the orphans reach adolescence and this can be particularly emotional and trying time. The orphanage provides facilities and programs specifically for strengthening the support within families. The orphanage also provides information and training for the community members, this training covers such areas as health, hygiene, and training for emergency situations.
Yayasan IDEP Foundation works together with the SOS Children’s Orphanage in promoting their activities through the Bali Cares Program, which is based in Ubud, Bali.

How You Can Help
If you would like to help support this project, contact the orphanage at sosbali@dps.centrin.net.id for more details.

The orphanage is in need of support for its daily running costs as well as the organic gardening project, which grows nutritious vegetables and herbs to increase nutrition for the children living at the orphanage.

Yayasan IDEP Foundation is also currently seeking support to introduce the Gurih Gurih Gizi (a vitamin A, iron and Idodine formula) Project at The SOS Children’s Orphanage.
